For as long as I can remember, God has put it on my heart to have my own business. No matter what I do, that idea has never faded or gone away. I wish that when God lays something on your heart, that He would also show you step-by-step instructions on how to accomplish it. I’ve never quite known what having my own business would look like, and I’ve definitely had my fair share of test runs…
When I had my first born in 2001, I joined Melaleuca and worked that business hard for the summer before I had to go back to teaching. I actually did pretty well with Melaleuca, but eventually the school year kept me busy and I slowed down. I actually still order from Melaleuca and love their products!
The following summer, I joined Avon. That lasted for a month.
Then I joined Southern Living at Home.
Taste of Home.
And three years ago I joined Beachbody. I’m still, technically, a Beachbody coach, and I drink my Shakeology regularly, but I was always too scared to fully get started. (I’m getting ready to start an online reset if anyone wants to join me!)
And then, of course, I started my own business selling painted furniture in 2012 and The Rustic Pig was born.
What I’ve realized through all of this, is that I want a business of my own, one that I designed, and I feel like Rustic Pig Designs is truly my OWN business. While I love painting furniture, I decided that I wanted to do something that involved me selling something smaller. Something that didn’t require me to rent out a space in order to sell.
So, I started making signs.
Little signs at first…
And then a little bit larger…
And then even larger…
Then I had to decide what I was going to do with all of these signs I had made. Eeek!
So, I decided to open an Etsy store.
The scary part of all of this was when it came time for me to actually open my store and then to tell everyone about it. My husband always asks me what I’m so scared about. I think, because I’m a people-pleaser, so I’m always worried that people won’t like what I’ve made.
So, when I hit the words “Open Store” I decided I would wait a day or two before I would tell anyone about it. I quietly added my shop link to my Instagram profile and then walked away.
Within 3o minutes of posting that link, I had a sweet Instagram friend post about how she loved my feed and shared that I had an Etsy shop that she loved as well! No joke! She direct messaged me and said, “I didn’t know you had an Etsy shop!” To which I replied, “Well, I didn’t until about 30 minutes ago.” 🙂 We both laughed about it and she asked if I wanted her to take it down, which of course I told her no and that it was totally fine.
I immediately realized that it took her posting about my little shop to get me to jump. I have no doubt that God used her, and her encouraging words, to give me the push I needed.
That day I ended up with three orders and another one the following day.
I am super excited to see where God will take this, and I am just so thankful for the opportunity to do what I love.
All of these signs are currently available at my Etsy shop HERE.
Stay tuned.. Home Tour coming soon! 🙂
