Telephone Table Transformation

The Rustic Pig: Telephone Table Transformation

I miss telephones.

I mean like real telephones.

The kind that had a base and a cord attached.

The kind that would fit perfectly in the nook of your shoulder as you tried to multitask without actually holding the phone in your hand.  (I don’t know about you, but I’ve yet to mastered that with my cell phone!)

Telephone Table Transformation

When I saw these two telephone tables at a garage sale this weekend, I thought of my grandma.  She actually had two like these in her formal living room, but they were much fancier.

My grandmother had a telephone table near her kitchen too.   It was different from the ones in the formal living room.  It had a little seat on the side and resting on the top shelf of the table was a rotary phone, and underneath was all of the phone books.

I remember whenever we would order pizza at her house, I would always ask if I could dial the number.  It made neat clicking sounds with the turning of each number.

“Click, click, click, click, click…. click, click, click, click, click…”

For some reason, when I went to paint these tables, I thought they’d be perfect in a girl’s room… with a zebra rug… and a black lamp.

Maybe even an antique black telephone.

Or, maybe with one that actually works.

I hear they’re coming back….

Telephone Table Transformation

…well, maybe not yet, but I have a feeling…

Telephone Table Transformation

When I was younger, I had a Swatch phone.

Swatch was cool back then.  Therefore I was cool.  Or at least I thought I was.

It was pink.

And see-through.

The neatest thing about it was that the base could be used as a receiver too!

It was awesome!

My best friend and I would each pick up an end of the phone and we would call boys and talk for hours.

And hours.

Telephone Table Transformation

We didn’t text.

We didn’t facetime.

We didn’t instagram.

We didn’t facebook.

We talked.

Telephone Table Transformation

I miss real phones.

I know my dad still has my Swatch phone in the attic.  I may need to go get it so you can see it.  It’s pretty cool.

I wonder…

How many of you still have a real phone in your house?  One that you actually use?  One that is plugged into the wall?

Much love,

PS– I used Annie Sloan’s Provence on the tables and waxed them with clear wax.

  1. I think Im the only one in the world that still has a working desk phone…..and it’s a dial too! 🙂 I love it. It sits right next to my chair in the living room, and when it rings, it truly RINGS. True, I cant walk around and talk with it, but who cares? 🙂 I love your telephone tables! Love the color! Oh and by the way? I DO know Im the ONLY ONE IN THE WORLD that doesn’t “facebook.” 🙂

  2. I really like how the tables look, and I’m surprised! 🙂 …a true trash to treasure!
We have an old dial phone tucked away somewhere~ it’s that color blue actually!
I’ve always had a feeling that one day we might “have” to go back to basics in order to communicate…
    Have a great weekend~ Heidi

  3. My grandparents also had a telephone table that had an attached seat! My mom still has a phone attached to the wall in the breakfast room. It has a 10 ft cord, so you can walk around the kitchen to still cook while talking. But my father in law has that beat. He has a working rotary phone attached to his wall!

I Love these tables, we has them growing up, a big lamp was always on the top shelf, magazines under and the phone sat on the front of the table, I have a phone in my living room that looks like and old black dial phone except the circles are push buttons, I keep it there because I love the nostalgia and that I can pick up the phone and answer HELLO!!! And it looks adorable like Grandmas, oh that’s right I am a Grandma now, they were just at Grandmas for 3 weeks and used the phone and I played albums for them, LOL!

  5. We actually do still have a landline but never use it! I keep thinking should just get rid of it but something keeps me from doing it! I think I just don’t want to let go of that past!! Beautiful tables…..love the color!~~Angela

  6. These turned out great! I had a see through phone too, but it wasn’t that cool!

We don’t have a real phone, my younger kids don’t remember ever having one. I actually joke often that my cell phone is really a camera and not intended to for conversation. LOL

  7. I thought of grandma’s house at the first glance of those tables! And that Swatch phone!!!! That was pretty cool back then!

  8. Claire!!! I love these! They would go so precious in my old house. Great find and beautiful job. Also, we have a home phone. With a cord!! Got it at Goodwill. I wanted something for the kids to find easily and quickly if they needed to call us or if there was an emergency. Half the time I don’t even know where my cell phone has gone. Love you!

    Hello Claire,
I want to say that these tables turned out so great!! Really pretty! I love your story as well. We actually still have two older phones that we still use in the house! Thank you for sharing!!!

  10. We have an old phone plugged into our bedroom wall and we use it. I miss being able to tuck the phone under my chin when I wanted to use both hands for something! We still have a landline because our cells don’t work well in the TX hill country where we live. Oh yes, that old phone doesn’t have caller ID, so I don’t even know who is calling until I answer. Talk about old-fashioned!

  11. love those! We used to call them step tables and everyone had them by the sofa. I purchased a 1940’s rotary phone several years ago cuz I love that look. It was refurbished so it works but we got rid of our land line just to save money! I miss it! Don’t really like cell phones and I do not facebook, tweet, or text!

  12. These tables remind of ones my mom had when we were young. She had two of them and our phone was on one of them. The color you chose is so pretty. I have one phone that plugs in the wall. It is an Eiffel Tower pfone that my husband got for my office a while back.

  14. HA! I’ve got you all beat…..When I was a little kid, our phone was on the wall and had a crank handle you turned a number of times to call your neighbor. Of course, everybody on your party line heard those rings, too. Ours was 3 short rings. My best friend’s ring was 1 long and 2 short.. Ah, the good olde days!!

  15. I love the color of these!!!

  16. Those were the days! I remember a very long cord, pulling it over the banister, into my room, and sitting in my closet, talking to my BFF for hours! Great memories!

I just love your style and taste! Not to mention your finds and makeovers! Pinning 🙂

  18. We still have one phone in our house hooked into the wall. After all, those cordless deals don’t work when the power goes out.

  19. I too miss old rotary phones..I used to love sitting at my Grandmothers telephone desk talking on her Victorian inspired phone..I even have pictures of me talking on it..lol. I’ve been wanting one of those old gossip tables to set up in my kitchen to hold my land line..and I too think they will make a come back I’m sure of it!

I have a landline still and hear better on it than the cell. I do like the freedom of moving from room to room with the phone in hand leaving the base behind. How about this, One of my best guy friends still has a PARTY LINE. LOL
