A New Look for the Living Room

So after seeing 25 amazing home tours last week on our Summer Showcase of Homes, I all of a sudden felt inspired to move some things around in my living room.

I love change.

I love moving things around.

I even love moving… to an extent.

When I was a teacher, I was convinced that you couldn’t do the job unless you liked change.  After all, things change every school year!  I loved setting up my classroom each year.  The bulletin boards, the new room arrangement, and new students who brought new crayons, markers, and pencils (I also LOVE school supplies!), I just think change is fun.

In this case, I wonder if you’ll be able to see the changes I made.  Here is my living room before…

Living Room Design

Can you spot the changes?

I know, not that different, but what you might not be able to tell from the pictures is that originally the furniture was centered on the fireplace and squared up in the room.  This time, I angled everything so it is centered on the TV allowing for every piece of furniture to get used in this room instead of just two.

I also switched out the end tables for the ones we had in our bedroom.  I just felt like they went better with coffee table.

I absolutely adore these end tables!!

Rustic Pig End Tables by House of Hargrove

When we lived in Dallas, before I started painting my own furniture, I used to buy my painted pieces from Elaine at the House of Hargrove.  In fact, I have several pieces that she has done that I just adore.  They are the first painted pieces I ever brought into my home and they are what made me want to start my own business when I moved to San Antonio and I could no longer make it to Elaine’s Barn Sales.  So, if you are in the Dallas area, be sure to follow her on Facebook as she always has amazing pieces and holds barn sales once a month!  You can follow her here.

Grain Sack End Table Runner

I used this old grain sack I’d been holding onto as a table runner for my end table.

Can you do that?

Can you use a table runner for an end table?

Is that a decorating no-no?

Oh well, I love it and it worked perfect for this piece!

I also switched out the buffets.  Since I don’t really have any black any where in the room, I decided to move the original black buffet from the living room to the foyer, and the one in the foyer to the living room.  (Remember, buffet hoarder here.  I have several.. You can read about that here.)

Virginia House Buffet

Can you believe I haven’t painted this piece?

I couldn’t do it.  I loved it so much that I wouldn’t dare paint it… or sell it.

Quick Story… I found this buffet at a garage sale.  It’s a Virginia House piece.  The man was asking $600 for it. I about died.  I told the man that I loved it, but I just couldn’t pay $600 for it, but that if it didn’t sell, and he was interested, I’d buy it for $150, and I handed him my business card.  A few days later I got a call from the man saying it didn’t sell and that he would bring it to me if I still wanted it! I almost died again.  Of course I did!  So, he delivered it to me that night!  How fun is that?  You just never know friends… it never hurts to ask!

Foyer Buffet

I moved the black buffet into the foyer.  It actually worked better with my chalkboard “B” hanging on the wall.

This buffet was the first piece my husband and I ever painted.  This is another piece I just can’t sell.  It has little keyholes and beautiful curves.  (Hmmm…looking at this picture makes me think of fall.  I need to fix that.  Or, I’ll leave it and be ready for fall in a few months!)

Now, with all of this changing, and speaking of fall, I think the only change I don’t like is when the time changes.  I like the time now.  I wish it would stay like this forever.

How about you, do you like change?

Hugs!

  1. Funny, I noticed the buffet change out right away. LUV this one… the detail on it is amazing. I also just noticed the similarities in our living rooms… brown furniture ( mine is a mix of leather and micro fiber, we have a Master Vic.. chocolate lab), red and cream rug and white end and coffee tables. To me it’s a nice fresh combination 🙂
Luv the changes you have made.
Have a wonderful Wednesday, I can’t believe it’s the last day of July already.

  3. I think it speaks loudly when someone who paints furniture doesn’t paint one. I have one of those pieces that I haven’t specifically shared yet, but have always planned to do so.

It really is gorgeous on it’s own. Hope you are doing well!

Wish I could give you a big old hug.
