Something Old, Something New Part 2

When I first posted Something Old, Something New, I was new to blogging and I hadn’t even started redoing furniture yet.  I was just a newbie all around!

I couldn’t have imagined this little drawer would end up being such a hit!

Although I pinned it to Pinterest back in September, it is just now bringing in traffic, and LOTS of it!  What a blessing this little drawer has been.
I was finally able to find a dresser I could steal the drawers out of, and so I thought it would be fun to do a tutorial, since last time I didn’t really explain what I did.
So.. here you go…
First, I found the ugliest dresser I could find… too bad I took the picture back when I forgot to use the memory card, so you’re going to miss out on that one!  Sorry!
This dresser was small, like REALLY small, in fact, it only had two drawers.
I painted all four sides of each drawer.
The top drawer I painted in ASCP Cocoa, and the bottom drawer in Old White.
Next, I taped my stencil onto the drawers.  I used a sponge brush to stencil the word “Love” onto each drawer.
After the letters dried, I distressed and waxed the front of the drawers.
Next, I added knobs.  If you are lucky enough to find drawers with neat pulls, then add them back on now.  If not, you’ll need to go on shopping trip!  Gotta love a run to Hobby Lobby!
I picked out some iron knobs for the white drawer and these sweet little white roses for the brown drawer.
Aren’t those precious?
Next, I grabbed 8 legs I purchased from Home Depot…

… and stained them using Minwax’s Dark Walnut stain.

Personally, I like to use a sponge brush when applying stain because not only does it hold a lot of stain, but it doesn’t mess up an expensive paint brush.  Oh, and you can just throw it away when you’re done… gotta love easy clean up!
After the legs dried, my sweet hubby pulled out the original screws that came in the legs, and then, using new screws, screwed them into the base of the drawer.
Once they were done, I added some beautiful pillows.
What do you think?  Do you have a favorite?

  91. Love, love, love the drawers!!!

  92. Tenngarden says:

Too great. These could hold all sorts of stuff, blankets, comforters, toys. I have had great luck with painting the entire drawer, inside and out, and hanging on the wall as a double shelf, screwing the bottom of the drawer into the wall. U can wallpaper, decoupage and trim the inside of drawer to make it really unique. I love adding legs onto the drawers, though. This would make a great side table too!

    • therusticpig says:

Those are super ideas!!! LOVE it!! Right now I have one by the entry way to catch all the kid’s shoes! Thanks for the ideas! Hugs!!

  93. Love this idea. In the process of saving the drawers from an antique dresser that can no longer be used. Theses will definaltely be part of my plan to keep a part of the past in our new cabin. Thanks for the info.

  94. Mary Stone says:

Love your little drawer idea…especially if I can’t find an old crate large enough to and not to deep to put pillows into…who would have thought! I live in Central California and it seems to me from reading other blog post that people in the southern and mid-west states get better buys on things like crates and grain sack bags. I guess Californians just want to charge more…I find this is very true even in our thrift shops like Goodwill or Salvation Army. I’m 72 yrs old (soon to hit the 73rd) and I’m on a limited budget….wishing I could order stuff from states that don’t charge so much, but then again there would be the added cost of shipping and handling.

Do you have a tutorial on the pillows? I especially love the ones with the postal graphics. Where did you find the material for those pillows. In addition, I also like the heart pillows…how about those?

This is my first time posting to your website although I have been following you by email. Thanks for sharing your wonderful ideas. Oh, by the way, I clicked the button for the “home tour” and saw your beautiful ready made kitchen. Can’t believe that people passed that house up because of the custom colors. However, I can’t seem to find any other rooms of your home tour…can you help me out there…if you have posted photos of the rest of your home, I would love to see it. Warmly, Mary

I just found your blog (II know, where have I been?!), and so glad I did. I absolutely love your style. Your furniture transformations are beautiful. I pinned these drawers. Cute pillows, too! Did you make them? I blog over at Altered Artworks, and would love for you to come over for a visit one day.

  104. Love how the drawers came out. so pretty!

  105. morninglorri says:

Hi there, probably a silly question, but I just came across this tutorial — fabulous by the way. Why did the screws need to be switched out when your hubby was attaching the legs to the bottom of the drawer? Those little details never quite make sense in my head. Do tell.

  106. Claire, I just wanted to let you know that your project was linked up to my Trash Day (trash to treasure) link party submitted by HomespotHQ. I wasnt sure if you were actually a contributor to their site (like as we do to Hometalk) or if they are just using your info. I thought it was strange that they were linking you up to the link party. 🙂 they have clearly linked all back to you but if you prefer, I can easily delete the party linkup. Just let me know!

I really like your project with the drawers . And I will definitely copy it..

  108. Jenny Maysonet says:

Hi Caire, when you say you distressed and then waxed the draws, what did you use to wax them with? I want to paint a beautiful coffee table I just purchased on Craig’s List and give it that distressed look. It is currently a light – medium pine color. Thank you! Love your blog! you are so talented and its a plus that you are also my sister in Christ! God bless! Jenny
