I still have a few things left to do before this office is complete, but like I’ve mentioned before, there is this little thing called a budget I’m trying hard to stick to.
While shopping with my hubby this past week, we came across a really neat antique store in Boerne, TX. While it had lots of lovely things, most of them were WAY outside our budget. (There’s that budget word again… Yuck!)
Just when I was about to give up and call it quits, I turned and spotted this antique lamp.
Now, I had just been to Hobby Lobby and HomeGoods a few days prior to this, and so I knew how much the style of lamp I wanted was ($85). I slowly turned the price tag over, as I had done several times that morning only to be disappointed, but this time I was pleasantly surprised. The tag read $20! I squinted a few times to be sure I was really seeing $20 and not $120. Then, I examined it carefully. Surely this lamp wasn’t REALLY an antique. The more I looked it over, the more I was sure it wasn’t a Kirklands or Hobby Lobby lamp someone was pushing off as an antique (yes, I’ve seen this before). The lamp was heavy and the cord alone looked ancient! In fact, several people stood back when I went to plug it in at the store to be sure it worked. Luckily, I didn’t get electrocuted, and it worked beautifully.
Of course I bought it! I love everything about it.. the details, the lines, even the old cord.
The lamp did not come with a shade, so I picked up this one from Target. In the end, my lamp ended up costing $35, and just like all antiques, it is a nice, solid piece!
Next, I needed some curtains. In the morning, the sun shines right through and makes it impossible to see my computer screen. Since there are three windows in my office, I knew I needed a total of 4 panels. Also, the windows are tall, so that meant I needed them to be at least 104″ long.
It still blows my mind how much these companies sell a SINGLE curtain panel for! I just don’t get it!
One of my first blog posts was on how I made burlap curtains for this room. It was the only room without curtains when we moved in, and being one of the first rooms people see when they walk in, I knew I needed to hang something. I was both a newbie blogger AND a crafter on a budget at the time, but they turned out cute… just not what I currently want for my office.
When I was at Target shopping for a lamp shade, I saw they had several tablecloths on sale. The more I looked at them, the more I realized what perfect curtains they could be! Not only did they have 104″ long tablecloths, but they also had 120″ long! Perfect for a curtain pool on the floor! LOVE!! Oh wait… it gets better… they were on sale for $15!!
I also needed a rug. I HATE buying rugs!! Again, something WAY overpriced!
Have I mentioned my love for Craigslist? I scored this lovely 8×10 rug for $150!
To me it looked like handwriting… perfect for an office of a blogger! (Now, if this rug print is really some foreign language that says something crazy, I don’t want to know about it. I doubt I know anyone who would notice if it was, so I don’t want to know either. Now if it says something horrible, then by all means, let me know. Until then, I am going to imagine that it says I am wonderful.)
Finally, I found the desk I was looking for, AND I didn’t even have to paint it!!
Another Craigslist find for $150. It also came with 8 chairs that I am going to redo and hopefully make all my money back, turning this desk into a steal for F-R-E-E!
I still have more work to do, but it is coming along. It is definitely a room I love being in.
By the next office post, I should be ready for the final reveal! At that time I will add up everything so you can see how much I spent on this makeover.
Hope you are having a great week!
